The calculation to use
A practical network-only estimate is: upload seconds equals file size in bytes multiplied by eight, divided by upload speed in bits per second. Use decimal gigabytes and megabits consistently, or convert both values to bytes and bits explicitly. A speed-test result is still only a snapshot; real upstream throughput can change during a transfer.
Duration by itself is not enough to predict size. A high-bitrate game capture can be far larger than a lower-bitrate screen recording of the same length. The prepared clip may also use a different encoding profile from the source. For an honest comparison, measure the actual source and prepared output rather than assuming that a 30-second selection is always one-sixtieth of a 30-minute file.
Why the worked example is useful but not a benchmark
The example above uses round hypothetical values so the arithmetic is easy to audit: 1.8 GB multiplied by eight and divided by 20 megabits per second is approximately 720 seconds. A 30 MB prepared clip at the same upstream speed is approximately 12 seconds. Those numbers describe transfer only.
They do not claim that every 30-minute recording becomes 1.8 GB, that every 30-second Save Replay clip becomes 30 MB, or that a real upload will sustain exactly 20 Mbps. Browser preparation time, connection overhead, retries, congestion, and server processing still contribute to the end-to-end experience.
When trimming first creates the biggest difference
