When to Let Viewers Download a Shared Video

Downloads make sense when the file itself is part of the handoff. A teammate may need the clip in an editor, a support case may require an offline evidence copy, or an event organizer may need the processed MP4 for a presentation. In those cases, forcing the recipient to depend on a hosted watch page adds friction without protecting the work.

The viewer receives Save Replay's ready processed MP4, not the original source recording or a folder of HLS segments. The download name is derived from the clip title or source filename. Review the clip itself before enabling the setting because trimming removes unwanted time, but it cannot hide sensitive details that remain inside the selected range.

The viewer-download toggle does not bypass clip access. A private clip remains restricted to its verified owner. A password-protected viewer must unlock the clip before the download becomes available, while public and unlisted viewers can receive the button when downloads are enabled. The file is not offered while the processed MP4 is still unavailable.

Owners keep a download control for their own ready clip even when viewer downloads are disabled. This separation lets an owner retain a local copy without granting the same action to every recipient. Save Replay creates a signed storage download when an authorized request reaches the download route.

Turning the setting off removes the built-in download path for future viewers, but it cannot delete files people already saved. Recipients may copy, rename, edit, upload, or forward an MP4 outside Save Replay. Use the setting only when that level of retention fits the relationship and the content.

Download permission is one layer rather than a complete content-protection system. Choose the narrowest useful visibility, remove private information before upload, and share passwords through an appropriate separate channel. If someone only needs to watch and comment, leave downloads off and send the watch link.
